Kenya Violence

The widely disputed Kenyan presidential election in December 2007 reignited ethnic and land disputes across Kenya in January 2008. The election dispute set off revenge killings, deadly rioting, and ethnic clashes between members of President Mwai Kibaki’s Kikuyu tribe and members of the Luo and Kalenjin ethnic groups who supported opposition leader Raila Odinga. Nationwide, approximately 800 people were killed and 600,000 were displaced from their homes. All photos © Jon Hrusa/EPA
