Researching Elephants
In a joint project of the Conservation Ecology Research Unit (CERU) of South Africa’s University of Pretoria and Mozambique’s University of Eduardo Mondlane, co-funded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), elephants in rural areas of Mozambique adjoining the Limpopo Transfrontier Park were fitted with tracking collars during November 2007. The research was aimed at implementing a systemic approach to elephant management throughout Mozambique, where conflict has occurred between village residents and free-roaming elephants in the wild.
