South Africa Xenophobic Violence

In May 2008, South Africans attacked immigrants to the country – mostly Zimbabweans and Mozambicans – in xenophobic violence that spread across South Africa’s economic heartland and left thousands of foreigners destitute. The UN refugee agency UNHCR estimated the number of displaced people at more than 17,000. The attacks, which began in squatter camps around Johannesburg and later spread across the country, left more than 60 people dead and hundreds seriously injured. All photos © Jon Hrusa/EPA
